HOW BAD IS YOUR CAVITY?

Our dentists are here to help you from the first signs of a developing tooth cavity

An image of discolored teeth
STAGE 1: DEMINERALIZATION

White patches on the enamel are the first signs of early tooth decay. Bacteria and dental plaque demineralize and weaken the tooth. With adequate brushing, flossing, and fluoride use at this early stage, the damage can be repaired.

STAGE 2: ENAMEL DECAY

Enamel loss causes dental decay to be able to attack and wear away the tooth's surface. Small cavities may result from this. A cavity is what? A dental cavity is the hole that tooth decay leaves behind in your tooth. Once they form, maintaining basic oral hygiene won't be sufficient to undo the harm. Your tooth can only be repaired with a dental filling.

STAGE 3: DENTIN DECAY

Once the cavity has penetrated the enamel, it starts to erode the dentin layer of the tooth. As the decay progresses, you could experience some tooth sensitivity to hot and cold meals because dentin is softer and more brittle than enamel.

STAGE 4: DENTAL PULP INFECTION

Pulp comes next, after dentin. With roots that extend all the way to the tooth's tip, the pulp is the tooth's central structure. At this point, a toothache is frequently a symptom that your tooth's life is in jeopardy because it houses the tooth's blood vessels and nerves.

STAGE 5: ABSCESS FORMATION

A pocket of pus and infection known as an abscess can develop after the decay reaches the tooth's tip and spreads into the nearby tissues. Abscesses should only be securely drained by a dentist because they are excruciatingly painful. Serious health problems may result if the abscess spontaneously bursts.

WHAT TO EXPECT: YOUR DENTAL FILLING PROCEDURE

Count on our expert dental professionals to restore your teeth to their former glory

If you get a cavity in a tooth, it's not the end of the world (or your smile) because our dentists can cure it effectively and swiftly. In order to make your treatment painless, we will first numb the area around your tooth. Applying the local anesthetic is much more comfortable and relaxing than typical at our office thanks to unique technology like Dentapen and DentalVibe. The decay can then be removed using state-of-the-art tools and technology, followed by sanitization and filling of the tooth. At Nu Dentistry Houston, all of our dental procedures, our dentists focus on aesthetics. We constantly aim to restore your cavities to their pre-cavity state in terms of both appearance and comfort. Our dental fillings are made of dental composite that is shade matched to your teeth. This guarantees that the appearance of your healed tooth is identical to that of the original. Up till your tooth is totally repaired, composite resin is put in layers and hardened with a UV light after each layer has dried. In order to perfectly restore the form and bite of your tooth, we will then reshape the filling.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the greatest solutions for permanently replacing lost teeth when properly placed and completed. Dental implants serve as a replacement for the natural root of your tooth. This stops the degradation of bones. In addition, having dental implants as replacement teeth will keep all of the nearby teeth healthy, allowing you to keep your natural teeth. Dental implants can last a lifetime if properly taken care of and maintained.

Crowns & Bridges

As a restoration procedure, crowns and bridges assist patients in regaining the functioning of their teeth. People who have weak, missing, or rotting teeth can benefit from this procedure. In contrast to dental bridges, which are used to replace one or more lost teeth, dental crowns will help your individual teeth look wonderful and regain their functioning.

Cavities & Fillings FAQ

Cavities don’t disappear on their own. They are permanent holes in your tooth that can only be fixed with professional tooth decay treatment like a filling, crown, or root canal. However, if decay is caught before a cavity appears, fluoride and diligent oral hygiene can help reverse demineralization.

Composite dental fillings typically last between 7 to 10 years on average. However, with good care and proper dental hygiene, you can extend their lifespan even longer to as many as 15 years.

Good dental hygiene isn’t just about flossing daily or brushing your teeth twice a day. Your lifestyle, including the foods you eat and how often you eat them, can make you prone to cavities. Additionally, chronic dry mouth can make it more difficult for your mouth to keep dental plaque and tooth decay at bay.

In addition to the material used, your cavity filling cost depends on several factors: the cavity’s size and extent, the number of teeth needing filling, and your dental insurance. If you have any questions about your treatment’s exact cost, please contact our office and schedule a consultation with our team.

All cavities need to be treated and filled. However, this does not always require a dental filling. With more extensive tooth decay, our dentists may instead need to perform a crown or root canal procedure to remove the diseased tissues and then fix the damage left behind.

The longer you leave a cavity untreated, the worse it will become. While a cavity first only attacks the outer enamel layer, it will continue making its way towards the tooth’s center. As the pulp is damaged, the tooth’s nerve and blood vessels will be damaged. This not only causes intense cavity pain, but it starts a ticking clock on your tooth’s life. At its worst, the tooth may die and pass the point of no return. It will need to be extracted.

The Best Dentist In Houston, TX
Sandra Archuleta

We have been looking for a family dentist for a long time, we have tried a bunch of places but nothing felt quite like home. Not too long ago we stumbled upon Nu Dentistry and met Dr. Ali. Not only was he professional, kind, and gentle, but he always finds a way to fit us in when we need an appointment. He’s also pretty funny! I appreciate that he takes the time to explain what he’s doing, before he does it. That really puts me at ease.
